Vertu Motors Backs Somerset Cricket Foundation's Walking Cricket Initiative

Vertu Motors, a partner of the Somerset County Cricket Club, has gone in to bat with Somerset Cricket Foundation’s Walking Cricket initiative.

Vertu has made a generous £5,000 donation to support the Foundation’s Walking Cricket initiative, which is a ground-breaking programme that brings together individuals of all ages and abilities by offering a unique and accessible form of the sport.

This initiative is designed to promote physical health, mental well-being and social interaction, contributing to a sense of community and unity among participants.

The substantial donation will enable Somerset Cricket Foundation to launch two new hubs in Somerset, and significantly expand the reach of this innovative form of cricket.

With seven active hubs already thriving across the region and more 100 players registered, of which 35% are female, the Walking Cricket groups are a beacon of inclusion and physical activity for older adults.

Catering predominantly to those aged between 66 and 80, the programme is renowned for its positive impact on mental and physical well-being, providing a platform for social interaction, and enhancing flexibility and mobility among its participants.

Robert Forrester, Chief Executive of Vertu Motors, commented on the donation: “We are delighted to support the Walking Cricket initiative, a brilliant adaptation of the classic game, which opens up opportunities for older and less mobile individuals to stay active and connected.

“This aligns perfectly with our ethos at Vertu Motors, where community and inclusivity are at the heart of what we do. Our contribution is not just a donation; it’s an investment in the health and happiness of the community.”

The initiative's popularity and effectiveness stem from its unique approach, adapting cricket to accommodate varying abilities and mobility levels. Aimed primarily at engaging older adults, those who are semi-retired or retired, Walking Cricket has made the sport accessible and enjoyable to a wider audience.

Highlighting the significance of this initiative, a special Inclusion demonstration event is scheduled later in the year as apart of the Somerset vs Derbyshire One Day Cup game at the Coopers Associates County Ground, which has been the home of Somerset County Cricket Club since the 1880s.

This event will feature members from the seven Walking Cricket hubs, showcasing their skills on the same pitch as Somerset’s first team - a rare opportunity, as the groups usually play at local grassroots grounds or leisure centres.

Jon Bendle, Managing Director of Somerset Cricket Foundation said: “We’re delighted and extremely grateful to Vertu Motors for their generous donation. Our Walking Cricket Programme has seen significant growth over the past 12 months and is one of flagship programmes across our community work streams. It’s demonstrating great social impact and genuine betterment to people’s lives: it’s connecting communities, developing friendships, and keeping people active. We look forward to developing a strong partnership with Vertu Motors over the next 12 month and into the future.”

Vertu Motors, with its strong presence in the South West including Vertu Volvo Taunton, Vertu Taunton Jaguar Land Rover, Vertu Bridgwater BMW and Vertu MINI Bridgwater, is committed to fostering community initiatives that promote health, well-being, and inclusivity.
